ABOUT OUR LINEN
YARN
Linen is what we specialise in. When we first started Govardhan, Linen is one of the first qualities we started with and have continued to sell it for over 30 years…
Linen comes from the flax plant, which is a hardy plant that requires little water and few pesticides and fertilisers. Linen production has a long history in Europe, and most high quality flax comes from France and Belgium. Our Flax is sourced from France and Belgium. The yarn we source is high grade long staple yarn. If you compare our linen with cheaper linen or cheaper linen garments you will notice a difference. Our cloth won’t pill, there is no slippage and it has a beautiful density.
PRODUCTION
We have our production unit set up in Bangalore and Coimbatore, India.
-
We use State of the Art Rapier machines imported from Germany.
-
Our vertical infrastructure takes utmost control and care of our weaving processes and the units offer all variants of weaving designs including Plain, Twill, Satin and complex Dobby and Jacquard patterns.
UNIQUE NATURAL COLOUR OF LINEN
To enable the separation of fiber from plant, flax is retted. The plant is left lying on the field for up to 6 weeks while nature takes its course. The green stem dries out and turns woody and brown. The exact color depends on the amount of sun and rain during the retting process.
The unique beige color of linen fabric is the natural hue of flax, the color of nature. You can find these colors in the shop as flax, natural and oyster. These products are not dyed, only washed or bleached. It’s linen in its most natural form!
WHY LINEN
We love linen and here are some reasons why -
-
A Strong Fibre - Flax is a strong fiber. It requires great knowledge to weave the stiff fiber into a quality fabric. A high-quality linen fabric can last years and has a high resistance to wear and tear.
-
Naturally Sustainable - The plant does not require irrigation and hardly any plant-protection products. The fiber is harvested through natural processes and all other parts of the plant are used for the production of, for instance, food, paper, or insulation material.
-
Highly Absorbent - Flax fiber is hollow on the inside and can absorb moisture well, in fact a linen fabric can absorb up to 20% of its own weight in water!
-
Thermo-reguating - Flax fiber has great thermo-regulating qualities ; the hollow strucuture of the fiber breathes and makes it cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
